Pittsburgh police have charged a black teen in an attack on a white teacher from the Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
The black teen, who is not being identified because he’s only 15 years old, was charged Tuesday with simple assault and taken to Shuman Juvenile Detention Center. He also faces a probation violation, police said.
The black on white attack against 50-year-old James Addlespurger on Tito Way — an alley off Liberty Avenue — was captured by surveillance cameras on Thursday afternoon.
The video showed Addlespurger walking by a group of black teenagers when one of them abruptly turned and hit him for absolutely no reason other than him being white. Addlespurger fell face-first to the concrete and his head struck a curb as the black teens walked away.
Police said the suspect’s parents brought him to the Zone 2 police station to be interviewed Tuesday. They said the other people in the video will not be charged, although if it were white teens and a black victim, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Luis Farrakhan, the ACLU and President Obama would all be forming a rally in that alley today. There would be a call to strong up the white racist punk who perpetrated the heinous hate crime.
Addlespurger teaches 10th and 12th grade English at CAPA, police said. He was recovering from the attack at home Tuesday.
